Verizon – a large US telecommunications provider has agreed to acquire the main aspects of the Yahoo business for $4.8 Billion USD.
Last year Verizon purchased AOL, which will now have key business units merged with Yahoo – while the websites will still operate independently.
This seems like a good price for Verizon as Yahoo in its prime was valued at greater than $125 Billion USD.
Today Yahoo still attracts over 1 billion monthly active users and 600 million monthly active mobile users.
However Yahoo is not selling all their assets to Verizon – they will keep their stake in Chinese ecommerce giant – Alibaba, and they will also keep Yahoo Japan which is the number 2 most visited website in Japan. A number of patents will also be kept.
Back in 2008 you may remember Microsoft made a bid to buy Yahoo for $US44.6 Billion, however the deal was rejected.
